Grasshopper Days 12-17-12

Grasshopper Days

For today, December 17, 2012

Outside my window...  the snow is creeping lower down the hills, but not quite to our house.  Of course, tomorrow snow flurries are forecast, and tomorrow Tate has two appointments at Children's Hospital in Seattle.  Oh joy...

Hearing...  the boys, mostly quiet, but taking a break to talk amongst themselves; the dryer tumbling, and the furnace blowing.

Thinking...  what a blessing it is to have all my boys comfortably under my roof, safe, and secure.

Praying...  for the families in Connecticut whose children didn't come home.

Thankful...  for the promise that someday - in that day - things will be better.  Our advent devotions this weekend came from Isaiah 11.  I could barely get the words out.

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him-
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and power,
the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord-
and he will delight in the fear of the Lord...

... with righteousness he will judge... with justice...
... with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.
Righteousness will be his belt
and faithfulness the sash around his waist.

The wolf will live with the lamb,
the leopard will lie down with the goat,
the calf and the lion and the yearling together;
and a little child will lead them...

... They will neither harm nor destroy
on all my holy mountain,
for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.

In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples;
the nations will rally to him,
and his place of rest will be glorious.

In that day...

Creating...  making plans for a Christmas open house this Saturday :D

Going...  my goal is to not leave the house for the entire day. for probably the first time this month.  Wish me luck ;D

Reading...  advent devotions and Christmas stories :D

Looking forward to...  lots of friends dropping by on Saturday - I hope!

In the kitchen...  oh yah!  No rehearsal tonight, so I'll need to think of something.  Maybe chicken, and the left-over green bean casserole - yum.

In the learning rooms...  Wyatt is home (no public school this week), but all the boys are getting caught up on some homeschool work.  Tate is finishing a chapter review (archaeology/paleontology/geology - the formation of rock strata) in preparation for a test tomorrow or Wednesday.  Wyatt is working on his World History (Machiavelli!).  And Gunnar is dissecting an owl pellet and trying to reconstruct a rodent.

Around the house...  must get some photos of all the festive, Christmassy goodness ;D  It's so dark outside this time of year, even at midday.

Noticing that...  the pile is creeping back, onto my desk...

Something to remember for later...  we're still doing the tradition of unwrapping a Christmas book each night, though the boys' schedules are a bit complicated and sometimes we get behind.  But all my boys (even at 11, 14, and 16!) still like to sit together and read stories aloud, like Worried Arthur and The Red Ranger Came Calling.  And now they do some of the reading.  Wyatt in particular has a very expressive reading voice :D

A favorite quote for today...
No more let sins and sorrows grow
Nor thorns infest the ground
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found, far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found

Joy to the World

One of my favorite things...  all of us home, together :D

A few plans for the rest of the week...  down to Seattle for Tate's appointments tomorrow, sending Christmas cards, baking cookies, reading our Advent devotions together, and singing carols :D

A peek into my world...  Do you know how hard it is to get a picture of a baby, who is absolutely intent on getting her feet into her mouth?!  Crazy hard.  Good thing I had such a great assistant - Gunnar :D

There have been a lot of tears since Friday - your quote from Isaiah made me cry again. Those children were exactly Matthew's age, and seeing the police outside of my boys' school this morning nearly undid me. We had a similar threat against our elementary school on Matt's first day of Kindergarten - fortunately they headed it off, but I am simply overwhelmed.

That picture of your gorgeous, blessing of a niece brought a smile to my face. God bless our babies.

Leah, you have been on my mind, knowing you're (geographically) close.

I wish you (both!) WERE in my neighborhood :D

If we lived closer, we would BE there! Hope you had a quiet stay home day and a fabulous week. Sounds like a very fun day planned for Saturday.

Blessings!

I think that precious baby girl looks like Gunnar, at least in her eyes!
