Tate had hoped to hunt this fall, but we missed the cut-off for hunter safety classes, so no license this year. (Oops. Bad mom.) It probably didn't help that Grampa Grasshopper recently had a very successful caribou hunt up in northern Quebec. (Yes, you're allowed two.) We're enjoying the benefits of that :D
But, while Tate can't hunt this year, he can go along with Grampa Grasshopper and watch and learn. And when Grampa called Wednesday morning to see if Tate could get free from school it only took a second to say, "YES!" Here they are, setting off, Wednesday afternoon, looking for deer.
No luck this time, but maybe next time.... ?
(And for any of you squeamish about hunters shooting the cute wild animals... You can be a vegetarian if you like, but we're not. Wild animals are leaner and healthier and hormone-free. And if you think about it, shooting them is much more humane than either the way farm animals usually die, or the wild animals die in the wild. They starve. They freeze. Or they're prey.)

...Or they smoosh someone's car. It's always deer season on the highways in Iowa where they are corn-fed. :p
The males in our house all do archery, and are very keen to go bow-hunting. Unfortunately they missed this year's season, but maybe next year...
that Caribou is quite big - is the meat good??
You make me laugh. What do you expect from people who grew up watching Bambi :D My husband hunts..well used to..is quite unable now due to a bad back. But he was never very successful. He came back with great stories of watching the fawns prancing around. And watching the sunrise. He would be so jealous of grandpa grasshoppers success.

Oh, your Dad is so handsome. I have a hunting Dad also. it's fun not being vegetarian. YUM. It's good for the boys to hunt with Grandpa. So far, my kids haven't hunted yet, but I know my Dad will be there when they are ready.
Oh Melanie... I forgot road kill!
Felicity - I've only cooked two batches. The first I grilled on my GF grill, and it was tasty, but a bit tough - I probably overcooked it. The next I did in the crock pot and it was delicious. IMHO, the crock pot is perfect for wild meat :D
Someone gave us about seven pounds of deer sausage from last year's hunting! He just didn't want it because they didn't make it spicy enough for his taste! He also said it was too tough, but Doug made chili in the crock pot from it - wow, is it good! Now if it will just get cool enough to truly enjoy it! :-)
You will get no arguments from me, even though the photos make me squeamish. Poor caribou!! Shhh, don't say anything, but a raccoon made his way under our tires as we drove home from friends' last night. I felt ill for awhile... ugh! Murray wanted me to add, "we didn't cook and it it though :0D!"
Blessings!
Deborah
